Headaches area common symptom and effect of traumatic brain injury (TBI). As a matter of fact, severe and persistent headaches are frequently the most obvious cause of TBI, and one of the reasons why the patient seeks medical care in the first place. Headaches can last for just a few hours or days following the injury, or can plague the patient for many years.
Treatment of Headache
Following the injury doctors will determine the site and extent of the injury, and will decide on the course of treatment. The patient will most likely continue to experience headaches until the inflammation in the brain is reduced, either through medication or surgery. Patients with long-term headaches following the treatment are often prescribed drugs to keep the pain at bay.
Prognosis of Headaches
In some cases of TBI headaches will be present following the injury, but will subside once the swelling and inflammation has gone down. In other patients, headaches become a chronic issue. A neurologist can best determine the exact reason for persistent headaches following TBI, and can suggest a treatment plan.
