Muscular dystrophy refers to a group of inherited muscle diseases that cause muscle fibers to be prone to damage. As the disease progresses, voluntary muscles become weaker, and eventually fat and connective tissue replace muscles.

Muscular Dystrophy is a genetic condition that affects the muscle protein dystrophin.

Symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy

Common symptoms of muscular dystrophy include:

  • Lack of coordination
  • Muscle weakness
  • Contractures of the muscles
  • Loss of mobility

    There is currently no cure for muscular dystrophy, so treatment focuses on dealing with symptoms and the prevention of progression. Treatment generally comprises a combination of medications, physical therapy, and assistive equipment.
