Syringomyelia

Syringomelia is a condition in which a cyst forms in the spinal cord. As the cyst grows, the spinal cord is damaged.

Causes of syringomyelia include:

Brain abnormalities

Spinal cord tumors

Spinal cord injury

Spinal cord inflammation resulting from disease or surgery

Symptoms of syringomyelia include:

Weakness in the arms and legs

Difficulty walking

Neck and arm pain

Decreased sensitivity to pain

Treatment varies, but generally includes surgery to drain or remove the cyst.
