HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center is an inpatient facility that offers a network of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals for both brain and spinal cord injury patients.

The facility in Bakersfield is for spinal cord injury patients only. There is another HealthSouth facility that accepts spinal cord injury patients in Tustin.

Patients are provided for in a  residential atmosphere, and includes individually decorated rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, entertainment areas, and an outdoor area. In addition to its home-like atmosphere, CareMeridian also provides the most current and state-of-the-art technology and service. The staff is trained in treating medically complex situations, such as those that require IV infusion services and ventilator/tracheotomy support. With 24-hour physician and rehabilitation care, CareMeridian also offers rehabilitation therapy services, nutritional services, and pharmacy, lab, radiology, and medical equipment services. CareMeridian has four locations in Northern California, including Granite Bay, Sacramento, Marin and Gilroy; two locations in Central California, including Fresno- Weber and Fresno-Marks; and 14 locations in Southern California. Casa Colina provides a full roster of inpatient services in a state-of-the-art hospital for a variety of catastrophic illnesses and injuries, including brain and spinal cord injury. The facility comprises a network of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals all intent upon returning the patient to maximum recovery using the latest technology and services. Patients receive three hours of therapy at least five days a week, and more than 6 hours of licensed nursing care per day. Casa Colina offers its renowned Signature Program, in which each and every patient receives an individualized program, in both brain and spinal cord injury. Casa Colina is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), as well as the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center’s highly qualified staff, level of care, and newest technology have earned it a spot in U.S. News & World Report’s list of “America’s Best Hospitals 2008” for Rehabilitation for several years running. Rancho Los Amigos features 20 Centers of Excellence, including one for spinal cord injury and another for adult brain injury. Both centers feature an interdisciplinary team comprising physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. Because one in three residents of Los Angeles County speak Spanish, Rancho Los Amigos has expanded its Video Medical Interpreter system, allowing patients who have limited English proficiency to easily access interpreter services. The Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital, formerly known as the Rehabilitation Institute at Santa Barbara, is a 38-bed center that provides comprehensive medical care to those with catastrophic injury and illness, including brain and spinal cord injury survivors. The Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital strives to address the medical, physical, cognitive, psychological, and family issues of each and every patient using a team of interdisciplinary physicians, nurses, and therapists. All treatment is individualized and age appropriate. Every patient is assigned a case manager who coordinates the care plan and also assists with any social and economic problems that may arise as the result of the injury. Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Services (JCAHO) as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

In more than 30 years of providing rehab services, the Rehabilitation Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has treated more than 10,000 patients with spinal cord and brain injuries. In addition to providing state-of-the-art technology and services, the center also does research and has contributed greatly to what we know today about brain and spinal cord injury. The facility includes 76 beds and has a staff comprising physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. About 150 people are treated in the spinal cord program each year, which contributes to the center’s specialized skills and experience. The Rehabilitation Center promotes an integrated approach to care, which means the medical team works in conjunction with the patient and his or her family to ensure that optimal gains are made. The Rehabilitation Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Services (JCAHO) as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Recognized as a top rehabilitation center by U.S. News & World Report, the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic at Stanford uses a team approach to brain and spinal cord injury patient care. Physicians are experienced physiatrists (physicians who are board certified in rehabilitative medicine) with sub-specialties in the rehabilitation of specific injuries. The inpatient clinic has 17 beds and provides comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and management of both brain and spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injury and brain injury are two of the areas of expertise at St. Jude’s rehabilitation facility. Geared specifically toward children, the programs advocate hope and healing in a supportive environment. Patient care is highly specialized depending upon the injury, and all patients have access to a wide variety of programs including physical therapy, occupational therapy, education and support groups, audiology services, and speech therapy. In an effort to help patients gain as much independence as possible, structured therapy programs that include clinics, coordinated home services, and community re-entry services are part of the care package offered. The Long Beach Memorial Rehabilitation Center, located at the Long Beach Memorial Hospital, has brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation programs for adults at its Long Beach campus. The Brain Injury Program boasts specialized programs for people with all types and levels of injury, ranging from the Sensory Stimulation Program for seriously brain injured patients at the beginning of the recovery process, to the Brain Injury Program that focuses on wellness and community integration. The Spasticity Clinic, Balance and Vestibular Center, and Outpatient Neuro-Rehabilitation are also unique. The Spinal Cord Injury Program is designed to help patients reach the maximum level of independence possible, and is the only facility in Southern California to perform the advanced surgical technique of upper extremity electrical implants known as the “Freehand” system. The Miller Children’s Hospital, which offers brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation for children, is also located at the Long Beach Memorial Hospital in Long Beach.
