The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan treats a wide variety of catastrophic injuries, including brain and spinal cord injury. The center has been awarded more than $16 million in federal and private grants for rehabilitation research, restoring function, improving quality of life, and developing new therapy techniques.
The Center for Spinal Cord Injury Recovery located at the Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is known for its cutting-edge treatments, some of which may result in some improvement in those with spinal cord injuries.
The Brain Injury program was the first of its kind established in the Midwest, and treats more brain injury programs than any other the facility in the state. The Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan is also home to the Southeastern Michigan Traumatic Brain Injury System, and is one of only 19 Centers of Excellence for the care and treatment of patients with traumatic brain injury.

The Mary Free Rehabilitation Hospital, which provides inpatient care for both brain and spinal cord injury patients, is one of the few hospitals in the country still owned and operated by a women’s group.

University of Michigan’s inpatient rehabilitation center focuses on treating those with spinal cord injury, calling upon a diverse interdisciplinary team comprising physiatrists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, rehabilitation engineers, recreational therapists, social workers, and psychologists. The center focuses on patients of all ages, from pediatrics to adult, and is one of the only centers in the United States that specializes in pediatric ventilator therapy.
The center is a leader when it comes to research, and has been nationally and internationally recognized for advancing the field of spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
