In addition, they are also leaders when it comes to education and research. Magee’s spinal cord injury program, which is run in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, is a federally designated model system of care. Using cutting-edge technology and assistive devices, the goal is to help patients adapt and function to the best of their ability. Magee’s Lifetime Follow-Up System of Care ensures that patients and their families have access to help with issues and challenges that crop up after long-term care ends. The main goal of the brain injury program, which is also run in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, is to ensure that patients are able to function to the best of their ability at home, at work, in school, and in other community settings. Realizing that all brain injuries manifest themselves in different ways, each patient’s treatment play is individualized. Magee Rehabilitation is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

MossRehab Hospital

The Drucker Brain Injury Center at MossRehab, which has been designated by NIDRR as a Traumatic Brain Injury Model System, offers a wide range of services including physical and occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, recreational therapy, psychology, and counseling. The acquisition of everyday skills is one of the main goals of the program. Behavioral therapy is also stressed. The Spinal Cord Program is geared toward people with all levels of injury, and focuses on goals such as increasing mobility, learning to deal with daily activities, and using adaptive equipment. Vocational counseling that allows the patient to return to school or work is also an important aspect of the program. A weekly support group and a peer mentoring program is available to help patients deal with the emotional stress and challenges faced by those who sustain a spinal cord injury. MossRehab Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Shriners Hospital for Children, Philadelphia

PA 19140-4131 URL:www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org Shriners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia is a 59-bed facility specifically for children with illnesses and injuries, including those with spinal cord injuries. The interdisciplinary staff includes surgeons, physiatrists, psychologists, rehabilitation nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, recreation therapists, orthotists, and teachers. Each program is individually planned depending upon the child’s specific needs, with the goal of helping every child reach maximum independence. Shriners Hospital for Children is free. Children up to the age of 18 are eligible.

UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research

Physical, occupational, and other types of therapies are used to help patients with both kinds of injuries make the most gains possible. UPMC uses the Lokomat, a technological device that simulates walking, for patients with some forms of paralysis. In addition, the institute places a strong emphasis on research so that cures and new therapies designed to improve the lives of patients with brain and spinal cord injury are consistently being developed. Good Shepherd Penn Partners

Rehabilitation for brain and spinal cord injuries is offered via a multidisciplinary team approach. The team includes physiatrists, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, psychologists, and more. Patients receive 24-hour care and at least three hours of therapy per day. The Brain Injury Program features a self-contained brain injury unit and individual treatment plans. Families are included in the treatment plan, and are encouraged to take place in education sessions and conferences. The Spinal Cord Injury Program, which is new to the center as of 2009, focuses on a holistic approach to healing, taking into account each patient’s physical, mental, and social well-being. Good Shepherd Penn Partners is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation

Hershey Medical Center College of Medicine, Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation provides services for patients with both brain and spinal cord injury. The rehabilitation team includes physiatrists, physicians, nurses, therapists, psychologists, case managers, and care coordinators. Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

HealthSouth

Those who have suffered from stroke have access to specially trained staff at HealthSouth’s Stroke Rehabilitation Center of Excellence. HealthSouth hospitals that receive this designation have exceeded benchmarks in clinical programming and patient outcomes for the treatment of stroke. HealthSouth is also known for using some of the most advanced rehabilitation technology for both brain and spinal cord injury patients. HealthSouth has several facilities located throughout Pennsylvania. Brain injury rehabilitation is located at the Altoona, Bellefonte, Danville, Ebensburg, Erie, Reading, and Sewickley locations. Spinal cord injury rehabilitation is located at the Altoona, Erie, and Mechanisburg locations. Certification and accreditation may vary according to location. Allied Services Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine

The Spinal Cord Injury Program, which is located at Allied Health’s Scranton location, addresses issues such as cognitive and emotional challenges, muscle strength and coordination, bowel and bladder care, respiratory issues, and spasticity. The Brain Injury Program, which is housed at Allied Health’s John Heinz Rehab Center in Wilkes-Barre, addresses issues such as behavioral and judgment problems, cognitive challenges, confusion, memory loss, muscle weakness or paralysis, emotional issues, vision and hearing issues, and speech and language challenges. An interdisciplinary staff is available for patients with both kinds of injuries, and will design a comprehensive yet unique program designed to return the individual to the community with as much independence and function possible.

Our 148-bed acute inpatient rehabilitation hospital offers the full continuum of physical and cognitive rehabilitation services, including acute inpatient care, day treatment and outpatient programs for adults and adolescents. The wide range of illnesses and injuries we treat includes traumatic and mild traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke and other neurological disabilities, chronic pain, amputation and other orthopedic conditions.
